The 1N5401 belongs to a popular series of power diodes known for their high surge current capability and low forward voltage drop. Unlike the smaller 1N400x series which is rated for 1A, the 1N5401 can handle up to 3.0 Amperes of continuous current.
Its DO-201AD (DO-27) package features thicker leads to help dissipate heat into the PCB traces. It is primarily used to convert Alternating Current (AC) to Direct Current (DC) in bridge rectifiers or to act as a "freewheeling" diode to protect sensitive components from inductive voltage spikes in motor and relay circuits.
